Porsche Boxster
The 2020 Porsche Boxster is one of our top-ranking luxury sports cars. It offers muscular engines, razor-sharp handling, a comfortable interior, and good predicted reliability.
The 2020 Porsche Boxster comes standard with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 300 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. A 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 350 horsepower and 309 pound-feet of torque is optional, as is a 4.0-liter six-cylinder that makes 414 horsepower and 309 pound-feet of torque.
All of the Boxster's available engines are strong and deliver great acceleration. The six-cylinder in the new Boxster Spyder is especially potent. An engaging six-speed manual transmission is standard, and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic is optional in all models. Critics praise the automatic for its sharp, quick shifts.
With its base engine and a manual transmission, the Boxster gets 20 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway. Opt for an automatic transmission, and ratings jump to 21 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. Those are OK ratings for the class, though the Boxster has a smaller engine than some rivals that get worse gas mileage.
Boxster S models get slightly worse ratings: 19 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. Those figures are when the S has a manual transmission, but ratings are nearly identical with an automatic. The 718 Spyder gets the worst gas mileage in the lineup at 16/23 mpg city/highway.
